Favorable Opinion of the U.S.

A Pew Research poll shows Americans aren't much liked by just about everyone in the world. The poll surveyed more than 16,000 people in 15 countries and found that, overall, Americans are liked about as much as the red-headed stepchild at the family picnic.

The motivation behind this survey is flawed. It starts out with the premise that America is disliked. The survey is then formulated to fulfill this disposition. They never compare America to other countries. For example, America vSaudidi Arabia? America v France? America v Mexico?

If America is so disliked, why do so many people want to come here?

Despite the poll, this is the "greatest nation on God's green Earth" (Michael Medved).

Regardless of the study's accuracy, this country was not founded in order to win some global popularity contest. This country was founded for the sake of liberty. Jealousy also plays into negative feelings.

In my international travels and dealings with non-Americans, I have consistently seen a love-hate relationship with America. There are many elements that are loved and admired (and even more or less adopted), but there are many elements that are detested.

Interestingly, many of the disliked features are just another manifestation of the admired features. But you can't have one without the other. Otherwise we would stop being the great country we are.
